Dalcroze Class at PVMTA

William R. Bauer, Ph.D. leads Dalcroze classes and workshops for adults and children throughout the world. An experienced and compelling clinician in the innovative educational practice known as Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Dr. Bauer has given many workshops to students at all levels of training over the past decade. During his time as President of the Dalcroze Society of America (DSA), and then as its Executive Director, he worked to bring all Dalcroze teachers and students together to form a global community of practice.

Dr. Bauer has studied with many of the leaders in the field. In 2023, he earned the Diploma for Advanced Dalcroze Studies (diplôme supérieur) at the Institut Jaques-Dalcroze in Geneva. He also holds the Dalcroze License (1990) and Dalcroze Certificate (1983) from Manhattan Dalcroze Institute, having studied with esteemed mentors Robert Abramson and Ruth Alperson. In addition to studying composition with Abramson, Dr. Bauer also studied composition with Robert Starer at the CUNY Graduate Center, where he earned his Ph.D. in Composition, with Fred Lerdahl and Jack Beeson at Columbia University, where he earned his M.A. in Composition, and with Tom Manoff at Manhattan School of Music’s Precollege Division.

Dr. Bauer’s internationally recognized research into the theory, practice, history, and culture of Dalcroze Education, as well as in various aspects of jazz studies, has been published by several peer-reviewed and non-refereed periodicals. Most recently, his chapter “Dalcroze Education in the United States: Building A Community of Practice,” appeared in Navigating landscapes of Dalcroze practice: Music and movement in pedagogy, performance, and therapy. Ed. John Habron, Johanna Laakkonen & Selma Odom. Martlesham: Boydell and Brewer Ltd. (affiliated with University of Rochester Press), 2025. His book Open the Door: The Life and Music of Betty Carter was published by University of Michigan Press to critical acclaim in 2002. Craig Jolley, who reviewed the book for the Web site All about Jazz, wrote that Open the Door “is probably the most scholarly and informative biography of a jazz singer published so far.” Drawing on his expertise in African American musical traditions, Dr. Bauer uses Dalcroze methods to guide students in jazz and blues improvisation. He teaches music full-time at the College of Staten Island/CUNY, where he is the Music Program Coordinator and Music Events Coordinator.
